I posted this same list on a couple of my other sites (xanga, livejournal, myspace) and Matt asked on livejournal "So which new ones did you LIKE?"... Here's my response, copied and pasted.
The following program has been brought to you by the command CTRL and the letters C and V.
My 5 "best movies" so far this year are Garden State, Hotel Rwanda, Sideways, Big Fish, and Hero. If forced to choose, Sideways would get the prize.
The Incredibles was a fun film.
Anything with Johnny Depp - Finding Neverland, Once Upon A Time In Mexico, and Lost In La Mancha (fascinating doco on the Terry Gilliam Don Quixote movie that never got finished)
I also liked the in-joke-packed Looney Tunes: Back In Action, and Men With Brooms - a Canadian comedy about a curling team.
The following comedies were enjoyable... Shaun of the Dead (zom-rom-com!), Bubba Ho-Tep (no zombies, but a mummy - now who could have recommended this movie to me?), Anchorman, Dodgeball (loved Lance Armstrong's cameo).
Open Range - I haven't seen a good RECENT western in a while.
Star Wars Ep III - had its moments. Tied up some loose ends on the end of the first trilogy to the coat-tails of the original film.
The Phantom of the Opera - I've never seen the musical but I enjoyed this on my flight to London.
Team America: World Police - and I thought the Americans couldn't do satire. I still have mixed thoughts on this film. There are just some things puppets shouldn't do...
Gettin' Square - best Aussie movie I saw this year. David Wenham was good in his mullet-sporting, thong-wearing, dero role.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - I'd really been looking forward to this, and it didn't disappoint. WATCH IT! YES, AGAIN!
Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events - I had never read any of the books when I saw this. But I found it much more entertaining than, say, the other movie(s) based on best-selling childrens stories... HP, anyone?
The Life and Death of Peter Sellers - I applaud Geoffrey Rush for this performance.
NOT RECOMMENDED
Sommersby - while an interesting movie, not as good as the french movie it was an attempted remake of - La Retour de la Martin Guerre...
AVP: Alien Vs. Predator - what were they thinking? It had its moments of sheer entertainment... but why watch this when you could rewatch Arnie in the original.
Night Class (imdb title) / Seduced By A Thief (title on TV)... really bad made-for-cable crime caper that was about a... who cares... the title wasn't accurate with the plot. He seduced the thief, not the other way round. Just don't watch.
Coronado. While a fun watch, the only reason I watched this was that the video store gave me the wrong video in the case when I rented Ocean's 12. Of course, to boost my movie tally, I watched the whole thing before returning it and highlighting their error. Again, it was fun, but nothing you haven't already seen in Indiana Jones or Romancing The Stone. And how did they convince John Rhys-Davies to appear as the South American despot???
Hannibal. I didn't really think this was as good as Silence of the Lambs.
Super Mario Bros - don't even waste a second looking for this in the video store.
So there. That's some of my thoughts on some of those movies. Feel free to question individual movies if you wish....
Oh, and NAPOLEON DYNAMITE freakin' rocked.
